6:23 a.m. The words of Psalm 57 jump out at me: MY HEART IS READY, O GOD, MY HEART IS READY.
Whoa, whoa, WHOA. O God you duped me! I did not mean to utter those words nor do I wish to be held accountable to them!
I am anything but ready. In fact I feel light years behind, and no fancy DeLorean time machine is going to help!
My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready.
Heck, I don't even know what it means to be ready.
I've been reflecting on the situation of a new friend of mine. Her family is adopting a child. They could get a call any day. The could have a baby tomorrow, or in 13 months. How does a person get ready for something like that? A whole new life coming at any moment, a whole new life that will change their lives. Does knowing the day or the month of a baby's arrival even help us with getting ready?!
My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready.
Perhaps that's what the psalmist is trying to get at in these simple words. I may not be ready for today, but my heart is ready. My heart has already made the decision to be open to the wonder of this day. Thinking about my friend, I know these words to be true. Even if she and her family do not know when their bundle of joy will arrive, they are already ready. Their hearts have already opened up in love for the new child that will come to them. The rest -- diapers and all -- will come.
I'm still a little upset with God for bringing those words of morning prayer to my lips this day. I kinda hoped the psalmist could have said, "And God said, crawl back into bed and sleep the rest of the day." But no.
My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready.
My prayer this day is simply these words. I pray them for you, I pray them for my friend, and I pray them for us.
